Nicolai’s opera may be neglected, but not the tuneful overture.  It makes a dynamic opening, with unusual Sibelius and a luscious cello concerto to follow.  Richard Harwood’s often praised beautiful tone will have plenty of scope.  Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony had a huge influence on Brahms.
