Newsletter for September 2009

This is an edited version of the Havant Orchestras newsletter which is provided in printed form to players and Friends of the Orchestra.

Dear Players & Season Ticket Holders

It’s not usual to write to you during the summer but we wanted you to hear the news first, rather than read it in THE NEWS.  And it’s also not usual to announce the name of our new Bursary Holder before the AGM but this year it is related to the aforesaid ‘news’ so please read on.

To explain.  As Jessica Cottis is now the Assistant Conductor of the BBC Scottish SO she is too far away and busy to travel down to conduct the Hayling concert on 19 September.  So Peter has had to consider a replacement (with himself as the last on the list).

He contacted previous Bursary Holders with these results:

  • Ben Pope - would have accepted but he had been booked to fly to Tokyo to work with Tokyo SO on the day;
  • Andrew Gourlay - is taking part in a conducting competition;
  • Leo Hussain - is conducting an opera in Salzburg;
  • Daniel Cohen - is in Jerusalem;
  • Jason Lai - is in Bremen, recording a film score;
  • Clement Power - is in France, not sure why.  (He answered Peter’s call halfway up Snowdon!)

After consulting with Tony Gutteridge, the next call was to … the new Bursary Holder, as he had already rehearsed parts of two of the works at his audition and, needless to mention, showed considerable conducting ability.  His response, to Peter’s delight, was a very enthusiastic ‘Yes, please!’

So Samuel Draper will be in charge at the concert and will be coming down to rehearse HSO on the two previous Fridays.  He plays the horn and was an Organ Scholar and conducted several ensembles at University College, Oxford while he read medicine and physiology.  However he was unable to resist the lure of music and is now studying on the post-graduate conducting course at the Royal College of Music with Robin O’Neill and Peter Stark.

Soloist in Tchaikovsky’s 1st Piano Concerto will be Christopher White who is currently studying for his Doctorate at The Royal Academy having recently completed his Masters degree who and is furthering his piano studies with Hamish Milne and Nicholas Walker.  In addition he is working at the Academy as Academic Studies Junior Fellow.

Best wishes & see you soon, Sandra Craddock

From Our President, Pauline

Bright ideas are always welcome, and one of this year’s best came from season ticket holder, Crawford Wright.

He suggested to some of the orchestras’ supporters in his village that they might like to jointly sponsor some music or a soloist for one of the orchestras’ concerts.  No sooner said than done – and a few months later, a total of £300 means that sometime soon, you’ll be seeing the Swanmore name in the concert programme book with details of how the money has been spent.

If you think your community could do something similar, we can put you in touch with Crawford, who will tell you how he went about it.

In the meantime, we’re very grateful to Crawford and the Swanmore Superstar Supporters for taking action and hope (when it happens) that they enjoy the performance they made possible.

Volunteer(s) Needed URGENTLY!

We still need some coffee and tea-makers for the Symphony Orchestra’s rehearsals on Friday evenings at St Faiths Church Hall in Havant - the players’ comfort and music-making depends on YOU!  Please give them a life-line.
